Description

It's been a couple years since last imaging the local neighbors and so with updates to sensors, locale, software, and hopefully skillset, it was time to try it again.

This set of exposures is distributed over 5 panels framed on differing portions of the overall view, with substantial overlaps.

In the past I've had trouble assembling a mosaic in the the presence of dense star fields, due to many "pinched" stars from PI's GradientMergeMosaic process.

For this rendering, I identified two clean, well matched Lum subs having small FWMH and low eccentricity to create a master registration reference frame. I used StarAlignment to assemble these into the complete field of view, trimming the edges to 9kx9k pixels. This became to master registration frame manually selected into WeightedBatchPreprocessing. Thus all subs were automatically stacked into the final view at 9kx9k without ever having to merge mosaic panels later on in post processing. Each filter's stack was drizzle integrated to 2x scale to gain a little SNR once rescaled back down to the original and final 9kx9k.

This is a computationally intensive and time consuming way to stack, with more RAM requirement, but has the advantages of avoiding pinched stars and, perhaps most importantly, of being entirely automatic. No fussing and fiddling with the GMM process.
